There’s an overwhelming flood of emotion, that cannot be contained nor expressed. You’ve experienced this before, the full beauty and complexity that surrounds your everyday life. It happens within a single moment, that feels so timeless. Everything that exists within time, stands still. You attempt, in that moment, to soak up every drop of water that is flooding your mind, body, and soul. And when it hits you, this experience, this seamless yet vulnerable spirit of life which fully overwhelms you, the only thing you’ve learned to do in this moment, is smile.
These are two illustrations I did for a poster series for a gallery event that is being held at a local fast food joint in the town of my college.
These two burgers really reflect what I’ve been thinking lately. I understand that foundations and technical skills are crucial when it comes to being a fine artist and designer. In drawing, for example, I believe it is important to be able to render something as accurately and realistically as possible. I definitely don’t deny that exercises such as still life drawings, figural practice, etc. are important.
But sometimes, I wonder to myself why should I try to draw something so detailed or so realistic? I know it’s important to be able to and I should keep practicing it, but does everything need to have a million hatching and cross-hatching lines? Is it helping the concept? Or is it just me wanting to prove I can draw something really well?
For right now, this is the answer I have come up with. Concept is King, but a King is nothing without his followers. The followers, who support the King (concept) are those foundational skill sets. It allows the communication and emphasis of the idea. The more skills and the better they are, the more freedom there is for the concept. There are no restraints or limitations due to lack of being able to draw, paint, sculpt, etc.Basically, I never want to be limited in my ideas because my skills are lacking. Yet, I never want my skills to ever dictate what my ideas are.
A lot of artists and designers probably have figured this out :P
And too be honest, I always wanted to strive to be strong in both concept and craft.
These are just some things that have been on my mind.
